The
thrill of racing snowmobiles over water has attracted thousands of spectators
over the years. Grantsburg's two days of racing features the top racers from
the United States and Canada, each hoping to capture the World Champion honor
and the large cash purse.
The three-day
event features something for everyone! Spectators enjoy a panoramic view of
the Memory Lake racing area, during beautiful July weather. There is plenty
of spectator room, plus camping facilities, displays, vendors, wrist wrestling
championships, food booths, and activities.
Watercross begins on Friday with
IWA racing action starting at 1:00 pm, rolling into the evening
with a street dance from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Racing continues on Saturday
and ends about 5 p.m. on Sunday when the champions are determined.
On Saturday evening there will be a street dance from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.,
highlighted by what has become known as "The Best Fireworks Around." The fireworks
spectacular begins at dusk and draws thousands of satisfied viewers.
Whether
you're a snowmobile enthusiast or not, Watercross will provide you with a most
unusual and enjoyable summer experience. Be sure to bring your camera and video
recorder -- you'll enjoy showing the photos and videos to those who couldn't
make it in person, but wish they had.
And, if you're bold enough to try
racing a snowmobile across open water we can put you in touch with the
International Watercross Association (IWA), who sanctions
the races.
